What is going on: a very long summary
Moonstar stirred in her bed of moss, the golden light of day filtering
through the lichen covering the cave. She could hear voices outside, and
the commanding voice of Crystalrose issuing out the dawn patrols.
"Sorrelfur, you take Rainyleap, Twilightyowl, and Rosedapple on
afternoon border patrol. I've seen some Opalgrass Clan cats patrolling
the north side of the border very often. We should prepare for an
attack." Afternoon? Surely it couldn't be that late? Milkpool poked her
creamy white head into the den, tail twitching.
"Moonstar, it's time for Dawnkit's ceremony. I don't think that that kit couldn't be more excited." Moonstar leaped to her paws, nodding to Milkpool that she was dismissed.
"Sorrelfur! Come back!" Sorrelfur looked over her shoulder, shocked. Crystalrose, in the middle of appointing a hunting patrol, also looked confused.
"It's time for Dawnkit's ceremony." Sorrelfur beckoned for her patrol to come back. Crystalrose jumped down from the Wafting Moonlight Tree, a shadow of hurt in her indigo eyes. Moonstar took her place, looking down at the surrounding cats. Which should be Dawnkit's mentor? It certainly would calm Crystalrose's anger to have an apprentice, but Moonstar felt that a calmer cat should mentor Dawnkit. Rainyleap would be a good choice, but the clan would think she was showing favoritism toward her mate. Rosedapple would be the obvious choice, a wise senior warrior.
"Dawnkit, step forward." The small ginger tabby stepped forward, excitement sparking in her eyes.
"Rosedapple, step forward." The white-and-red she cat joined the ginger kit.
"I trust Rosedappe to mentor this kit in the ways of a warrior. Dawnkit, from this moment forward until you are a warrior, you will be known as Dawnpaw." A chant rose from the surrounding cats.
"Dawnpaw, Dawnpaw!" Clawpaw and Screamingpaw stepped forward to greet the new apprentice.
"Congratulations, Dawnpaw!" She heard Grassfeather mew. Sighingbreeze touched noses with the new apprentice, and Moonstar heard Rosedapple mew something into Dawnpaw's ear that made Dawnpaw give a jump of excitement. One of Moonstar's kits, Spottedkit, tumbled up to her.
"When can I be an apprentice, Mama?" Dovekit, Laurelkit, Goldenkit, and Rosekit padded up to her too, their voices a chorus of mews.
"You can be apprentices when you are six moons old. Now, go play with Sharpkit and Squirrelkit." The kits hesitated, then ran off in hot pursuit of the older friends. Crystalrose cleared her throat, and joined Moonstar. "I'll make a hunting patrol now." Moonstar nodded.
"Sorry for interrupting you. Can you assign me to a hunting patrol? I don't mind if I'm not leader." Moonstar brushed her tail against Crystalrose's shoulder and hopped down.
"Grassfeather, take Moonstar, Sighingbreeze, Goldenspark, and Firepelt on a hunting patrol." Grassfeather didn't look too nervous sbout taking Moonstar out on patrol. He was, after all, older than her. Padding out of the bramble-enclosed camp, the five cats entered the forest of tall trees that was their home. Grassfeather and Goldenspark took the lead, sniffing the air for hidden sky-bound prey. Sighingbreeze, evidently spotting something, stalked low to the ground and toward a slightly smaller tree than the rest. A robin was sitting high in the branches, singing a melody. Sighingbreeze was not distracted by this. Latching her claws into the tree bark, she slowly moved upwards. Hopping delicately onto the branch that held the robin, she dropped once again into a crouch. The robin didn't have a chance. Its song was cut off as Sighingbreeze snapped its neck with one bite. A paw prodded Moonstar's side, and she was jerked out of her stupor.
"Moonstar, this isn't going to catch us any prey." It was Firepelt.
"Sorry, Firepelt. I'll get going." Moonstar flattened her ears in embarrasment. A leader shouldn't have to be told what to do. Sniffing the air, Moonstar picked up a jumble of different scents. Identifying vole, she headed toward Moonstoneleavesclan territory boundary. The vole wasn't to far away now, and Moonstar dropped into a crouch, blue eyes fixed on the small vole in the undergrowth. Careful not to step over the border, she stalked toward it. Suddenly a whirl of paw appeared and Moonstar was knocked over. Startled, the vole fled onto the other clan's territory. Hissing in frusturation, Moonstar glared at her opponent.
"Clawpaw? Where's your mentor? And why did you knock me over like that?" Just then, Silkfur padded up, glaring at Clawpaw.
"I could ask the same. Clawpaw, answer us." Clawpaw shuffled his paws, looking scared.
"I'm sorry, Moonstar! I was stalking the same vole, and I thought you were an intruder!"
"'Sorry' catches no prey, Clawpaw. Moonstar, be sure to tell his mother about this." Moonstar nodded and looked expectantly at the tabby apprentice.
"I really am sorry, Moonstar." Clawpaw hung his head and his tail drooped.
"No problem, Clawpaw. No cat is perfect. Which reminds me, I still have to catch some prey." Apparently Moonstar's joking tone was soothing, and Clawpaw grinned, back to his old self. Leaving the mentor and apprentice, Moonstar padded through the undergrowth, mouth open, searching for prey.

When the five cats padded back, it was evening. Moonstar's jaws were full with the prey she had caught, and she was pleased to see that Clawpaw was also carrying fresh kill. Dropping her two robins down, Moonstar turned around to go collect her last rabbit.
"Mind if I join you?" It was Tigerpaw, Moonstar's cousin.
"No problem." Flicking her tail, Moonstar headed out of camp and inti the cool evening air, not crowded with cats. Each breath left a puff in the air.
"Do you have any prey you need to collect?" Tigerpaw was as old as Milkpool, but a sickness that he and Leafpaw, his other sister, had caught, forced them to remain apprentices while Milkpool had become a warrior. Many cats had also died in that epidemic.
"No. I just thought I'd join you." Moonstar nodded. With all the business, recovering from the sickness, and tensions with Opalgrassclan, she hadn't had much time to spend with her kin. Padding over to the spot where her prey was buried, Moonstar gave it a sniff. There was a strange smell on it, perhaps fox. Unocovering the dirt, Moonstar gave a gasp of shock. The prey had been decimated, and the smell of cats covered it.
"Moonstar, what's wrong?" Tigerpaw peered over at the rabbit, and his eyes widened.
"Opalgrassclan! It must have been them. Filthy prey-stealers!" Moonstar tensed.
"There's no evidence it was them. It looks like the cats who ate it covered themselves with mud before eating it." Still, the rabbit carried a faint scent of moorland. Then again, so did most rabbits.
"Let's bury it." The two cats scraped dirt and leaves over the ruined carcass, and padded back to camp. As soon as they entered, the other cats in camp tensed, as if they sensed something was wrong.
"You go, Tigerpaw." Moonstar tensed, her claw kneading the ground.
"All cats old enough to climb a tall tree join me under the wafting moonlight tree for an announcement." Moonstar could see Tigerpaw whispering to the other apprentices.
"When me and Tigerpaw were out to collect prey, we discovered that my prey had been eaten by cats not from Crystalwingsclan." Before the first gaso could be heard, Moonstar started speaking again.
"The cats were probably covered in mud, which shows that they didn't want to be discovered. A rouge or loner would not have cared. This shows that the intruder was clan." Mutterings swelled from the cats below.
"It was Opalgrassclan! I know it. They've had it out for us ever since we fought them to get back Snakekit and Treekit. Then when we stole them, whenever we even see them at the border, a fight always happens somehow." A few cats looked ruefully at their scratches. Trying to pinpoint the speaker, she noticed Cedarheart.
"We don't know that. Like I said, the cat was covered in mud. The rabbit did smell of moorland, but as do all rabbits. Next gathering we will check to see if Opalgrassclan or any other clan is looking especially skinny." The mutterings died down, but some cats shared dubious glances.
"Crystalrose, send out some evening patrols. No hunting patrols. We don't want to let the intruders take any more prey, and they might still be inside the border. Crystalrose nodded.
"Moonstar. Just.... make sure no cats are working with them. You never know." Moonstar stiffened.
"No cats in our clan would dare betray us. Assign the patrols, Crystalrose." Padding into her den, Moonstar curled up with an eye half-open and stared out at the murmurs and chatter of her clan outside. Surely none of them would betray their clan.... or would they?
Moonstar opened her eyes to a starry field. "Where am I?" Moonstar felt a cold breath and a starry white long-furred cat shimmered into view in front of her.
"Cloudspirit!" The cat's blue eyes blinked calmly.
"I know. Moonstar, you know what I am here for." Moonstar twitched her ears.
"Cloudspirit, I know. Can't we adress this problem late-" She never got to finish her sentence.
"The clan is more venerable than it has ever been! You need a medicine cat, Moonstar!" Moonstar shied away.
"But who will be this medicine cat? Cloudspirit, we are fine! We have no need of one!" Cloudspirit's eyes flashed.
"If you will not act, then we will make you!" A light flashed the colors of the dawn sky, and a thousand voices whispered into Moonstar's ear.
'The dawn sky will take a place not yet fullfilled! In the rocky mountains a choice must be made!'
Moonstar woke up, panting, as midnight light filtered into her den.

"Cloudspirit, I know. Can't we adress this problem late-" She never got to finish her sentence.
"The clan is more venerable than it has ever been! You need a medicine cat, Moonstar!" Moonstar shied away.
"But who will be this medicine cat? Cloudspirit, we are fine! We have no need of one!" Cloudspirit's eyes flashed.
"If you will not act, then we will make you!" A light flashed the colors of the dawn sky, and a thousand voices whispered into Moonstar's ear.
'The dawn sky will take a place not yet fullfilled! In the rocky mountains a choice must be made!'
Moonstar woke up, panting, as midnight light filtered into her den.
